SafeWork SA inspectors and investigators attended Circus Rio on 16 July after receiving notice of the performer’s fall.

As a number of safety and compliance issues were identified in regard to a winch that lifts performers and equipment, a WHS Prohibition Notice was placed on the winch and Inspectors advised the circus operators that the winch could not be used until all non-compliance issues were addressed.

On 17 July, inspectors remained at the circus until early evening when all compliance matters from the Prohibition Notice issued after the fall had been addressed and resolved, allowing the performance to go forward.

SafeWork SA will continue to monitor WHS compliance for worker and public safety while the circus remains in South Australia.
