Freedom of association

As of 1 January 2010, this information only applies to the state public sector (including most Government Business Enterprises) and local government entities. For further information please refer to Industrial Relations.

Membership of a union or employer association can provide protection and benefits.

Under the Fair Work Act 1994, you are given the right to choose whether or not to join a union or employer association and which union or employer association you want to join.

The Act protects you from any form of discrimination or victimisation whether you are a member or non-member.
