Shops in Adelaide’s Central Business District will be allowed to trade until 7pm on five Saturdays in February and March for the first time.

The extended shopping hours coincide with South Australia’s festival season and have been granted by the Hon Kyam Maher MLC, Minister for Industrial Relations and Public Sector, under the Shop Trading Hours Act 1977.

The exemptions allow non-exempt shops situated within the Adelaide CBD to stay open for an additional two hours from 5pm to 7pm on 18 February, 25 February, 4 March, 11 March and 18 March 2023.

Individual retailers can decide if they will take advantage of the additional two hours of trade available to them on these dates. Employees must also agree – and cannot be pressured - to work the additional hours.

The exemptions follow a request from the Adelaide Economic Development Agency and coincide with the Adelaide Fringe (17 February to 19 March), Adelaide Festival (3 March to 19 March) and WOMADelaide (10 March to 13 March).

The change was proclaimed in the South Australian Government Gazette last week and is the first time multiple exemptions have been put in place during the festival season.
