Guideline for safe electrical practices

The Industry Guideline for Safe Electrical Practices on Construction and Demolition Sites is designed to:

  • appropriately reflect the contents of AS/NZS 3012: Electrical installations - Construction and demolition sites in a user-friendly manner
  • provide businesses, employer and employee associations and their members with an industry specific guideline
  • contribute to the development of consistent high standard electrical practices in the construction industry that are conducive to electrical safety best practice at the workplace
  • reflect the Australian Work Health and Safety Strategy in reducing workplace injuries, particularly in regard to those resulting from electrical incidents.

The Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 3012: Electrical installations – Construction and demolition sites (AS/NZS 3012) is referenced in Work Health and Safety (WHS) legislation.

Testing frequency

Class of work Portable/specified electrical equipment Type 1 or 2 safety switch (Residual Current Device) (fixed) Type 1 or 2 safety switch (portable)
Construction and demolition work At least 3 monthly intervals by a competent person
  • Use the inbuilt test button (at least monthly)
  • An operating time/current test by a competent person at least annually
  • Use the inbuilt test button – immediately after it is connected and immediately before it used, first time each day
  • By a competent person, at least every 3 months
