Awards

Awards and their purpose

The purpose of an award is to set out your employment conditions so employers and employees have a common understanding of entitlements.

Awards are legal agreements that cover employment conditions and look after your:

  • rates of pay, penalty rates and overtime
  • annual leave
  • sick leave
  • parental leave
  • carer’s leave
  • hours of work and tea breaks
  • entitlements on termination of employment
  • protective clothing supplied by the employee
  • allowances for things such as uniforms and travel.

The full list of State awards can be found on the SafeWork SA website and you can also find copies of all awards by visiting the Industrial Relations Commission of South Australia’s website.

Your employer must make sure that an up to date copy of the relevant award is accessible to all employees.
