What are the awards?

Each year, the Safe Work Awards celebrate and recognise South Australians who have made a significant contribution towards Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) achieving excellence in the workplace.

The Awards include four national categories. The winners of each national category in each participating State and Territory will automatically become a finalist in the national Safe Work Australia Awards.

 


What are the 2012 Award categories?

  1. Best Workplace Health and Safety Management System
    1. Private Sector*
    2. Public Sector*
  2. Best Solution to an Identified Workplace Health and Safety Issue*
  3. Best Workplace Health and Safety Practice/s in a Small Business*
  4. Best Individual Contribution to Workplace Health and Safety
    1. An employee, such as a Health and Safety Representative*
    2. An outstanding contribution by an OHS Manager or a person with responsibility for OHS as part of their duties*
    3. Health and Safety Representative of the year (State category only).
  5. Augusta Zadow Scholarships

* Winners of this category will be automatically entered into the national Safe Work Australia Awards. Further conditions may then apply. National winners will be announced in April 2013.

Small Business

Businesses that have less than 20 employees or full-time equivalent are recognised in the specific categories of:

  • Best Workplace Health and Safety Practice/s in a Small Business

Can small businesses nominate for other Awards too?

Businesses that have less than 20 employees or full-time equivalent can also nominate for the following awards:

Augusta Zadow Scholarships

What are the Augusta Zadow Scholarships?

In 1895, Augusta Zadow became the first female Inspector of Factories in South Australia. She monitored working conditions for women and minors in factories and played a crucial role in securing better conditions for them.

In memory of Augusta Zadow, two annual scholarships of up to $10,000 each are awarded to assist with occupational health, safety and welfare improvements undertaken by, or for the benefit of, women in South Australia. Prospective Augusta Zadow Scholarship applicants must demonstrate commitment to

  • Making significant health and safety improvements for women through research and further education; and/or
  • Providing a solution to a health and safety issue faced by women.

Recipients of Augusta Zadow Scholarships can use them towards further education, research or the development and implementation of occupational health, safety and welfare initiatives. This education, study or research may be undertaken either in Australia or overseas.


Who can apply for an Augusta Zadow Scholarship and how?

Applicants for the Augusta Zadow Scholarship must be permanent residents of South Australia who have demonstrable interest, experience or background in health and safety for women, and who can begin their proposed study, project or research work in 2013.

To be considered for the Augusta Zadow Scholarship applicants must submit a proposal of no less than 500 words and no more than 1,000 words. The proposal must include:

  • An outline of how your proposal meets the selection criteria of the Augusta Zadow Scholarships.
  • An outline of how your proposal will benefit women in the workplace.
  • Details of where the project, research or further education will be undertaken.
  • Dates of the proposed course, study or project.
  • A one-page profile of yourself and a summary of the course, study or project you are proposing to undertake (for publicity and presentation purposes).
  • An outline of the costs associated with your proposal.
  • An outline of how the funds will be used.
  • The names, positions and contact addresses of three independent referees who are familiar with your employment, academic and other achievements and who are able to comment on your proposal.
  • Any further information that you consider relevant to support your proposal.

Entering and Eligibility for Safe Work Awards

Who can enter and how?

To nominate for a Safe Work Award, applicants must lodge their entry and any supporting documentation by 5pm on Friday 13 July 2012.


Is there a specific format that applicants have to use?

Potential applicants should refer to the conditions of entry (PDF 69kb) for more information.


Who cannot enter?

  • Organisations that won a Safe Work Award in 2011 cannot enter with the same initiative/solution/contribution.
  • Organisations that have had a supplementary levy applied under the Workers Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 1986 in the past 12 months.
  • Organisations that are not up-to-date with WorkCover SA levy payments.

When do entries close?

Entries for all awards categories close on Friday 13 July 2012 and must be received by 5pm.


How do I lodge my application?

Use the online application.

Ensure your completed submission (including photographs and any supporting documentation) are received by 5pm on Friday 13 July 2012.

Judging and Feedback

How are applications assessed?

A panel of judges consisting of SafeWork SA, WorkCover SA, union and industry representatives will assess all entries for each category.

Entrants in each category will be short-listed and a winner will be selected. During the short-listing process members of the judging panel may visit your workplace to talk to you and other staff about your nomination.

The judges' decision is final and no discussion about the merits of entries will be entered into with nominees.

Will entries and supporting materials be returned to nominees?

Entries and supporting materials will not be returned to nominees and no responsibility or liability will be accepted for any lost or damaged entries.

Announcing the Awards

How are the Awards presented?

Finalists and winners from each category will be announced at a gala dinner on Friday 26 October 2012 at the Adelaide Convention Centre, North Terrace, Adelaide.

The Minister for Industrial Relations will officiate at this event and present trophies and certificates to winners.

In addition, the winners from the national awards categories will be automatically entered into the national Safe Work Australia Awards as finalists. Safe Work Australia will announce national winners in Canberra in April 2013.
