Working Hours

South Australia has new work health and safety laws. While this information remains relevant, the references to legislation may not be current.

The May 2010 Approved Code of Practice for Working Hours (the Code) came into effect on 1 July 2010.

The Code recognises the significant risk, particularly from fatigue, that excessive working hours poses to the health, safety and welfare of South Australian employees and their families.

It provides a best practice approach to formulating policy on rostering and hours of work, taking into account the diversity of South Australian workplaces.

The Code was initiated as part of the work of SafeWork SA's Work Life Balance Strategy in response to South Australia's Strategic Plan target T2.12: 'Improve the quality of life of all South Australians through the maintenance of a healthy work life balance.'

A notice confirming the approval of the Code and the date of enactment was published in the Government Gazette released on 26 November 2009. The Code was re-gazetted on 1 July 2010.
