SafeWork SA Advisory Council

  • The SafeWork SA Advisory Council (formerly the SafeWork SA Advisory Committee) advises the Minister on WHS standards, policy and legislative matters. It will also promotes WHS education and training.

  • It has played a crucial role in helping South Australia to reduce the number of injuries in the workplace by 40% by 2012, as outlined in South Australia's Strategic Plan.

  • The Council was created to ensure that the government receives top-level advice from industry leaders and senior workers' representatives.

  • It oversees the strategic direction of SafeWork SA and provides leadership on workplace safety.

  • It seeks to ensure that South Australia takes advantage of initiatives that are at the forefront of WHS practices, as well as raises the profile of WHS in this State as an issue of critical importance to business and the community.

  • Tom Phillips, former President and CEO of Mitsubishi Motors Australia, leads the council as presiding member.

  • The other members of the SafeWork SA Advisory Council are:
    - Mr Donald Blairs, Industrial Officer, Shop Distributive and Allied Employees Association;
    - Ms Jill Cavanough, Organiser, Australian Education Union;
    - Ms Janet Giles, Secretary, SA Unions;
    - Ms Belinda Grant, Human Resource Manager, Amcor Australasia;
    - Ms Margaret Heylen, consultant with wide experience in the public and private sectors;
    - Mr Martin O'Malley, Nominated by Construction, Forestry, Mining & Energy Union;
    - Ms Jacqui Quarton, Work Health and Safety Manager, Master Builders Association SA Inc;
    - Ms Carol Vincent, Nominated by South Australian Farmers Federation;
    - Mr Bryan Russell, Executive Director, SafeWork SA; and
    - Mr Greg McCarthy, CEO, WorkCoverSA.
