Pending the full implementation of the new Approved Code of Practice for First Aid in the Workplace (the new Code), Michele Patterson, Executive Director, SafeWork SA has approved the following interim arrangements, effective as of 21 May 2008. These arrangements will be modified when the transitional arrangements for the new Code commence - anticipated to be 10 December 2009.

- HLTFA301B - Apply First Aid
- HLTFA402B - Apply Advanced First Aid
- HLTFA403A - Manage First Aid in the Workplace
HLTFA301B - Apply First Aid is the appropriate competency for persons rendering first aid, it is equivalent to the Senior First Aid Certificate.
HLTFA402B - Apply Advanced First Aid together with HLTFA403A - Manage First Aid in the Workplace are the appropriate competencies for persons responsible for first aid rooms, equivalent to the Occupational First Aid Certificate.

Refresher training should be provided and undertaken in accordance with the Code. First aid competencies additional to those listed above may be required, depending upon the nature of the hazards and the severity of the risks in the workplace. Employers should conduct a risk assessment to determine which additional first aid competencies, if any, are required.
Registered Training Organisations
Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) which are registered by a state or territory registering body under the authority of the relevant state/territory Vocational Education and Training legislation and which have the above units of competency within the scope of their registration are approved by SafeWork SA as first aid training providers for courses which deliver those units of competency.
This means that first aid courses conducted by RTOs which meet the above requirements and which deliver the units of competency specified above are approved first aid courses under the Occupational Health, Safety and Welfare Regulations 1995. There is no requirement for individual RTOs to apply to SafeWork SA for course approval or provider approval. SafeWork SA will not maintain a register of RTO that meet the above requirements.
Existing Approved First Aid Training Providers
First aid training providers who have current periodic approval by the Director may continue to provide first aid training in accordance with their approvals. This website will only list the names and contact details of these providers. It will not list those providers who only deliver first aid training under the RTO arrangements.
For information on the above units of competency, or on RTOs which deliver the units of competency, please refer to the National Training Information Service website.
