Hazard Alert No 53 - Discarded Syringes was issued in November 2002

Recently a council worker, who was the designated officer responsible for collecting and disposing of sharps and blood smeared materials received multiple needle stick injuries, whilst handling a black plastic rubbish bag that had been dumped near a public toilet area.

This hazard alert is to warn of the risk of injury from discarded syringes or sharpes when handling refuse bags.

Hazard Alert No 21 - Prevention of Legionella and other bacterial contomination in air handling units, cooling towers and other equipment was issued in August 2000.

In Australia major outbreaks of Legionnaires disease have been traced to contaminated water of cooling towers and evaporative condensers associated with the cooling system.

A number of recent incidents, particularly that involving the Melbourne Aquarium, have highlighted the need for owners of the above types of equipment to carry out regular maintenance and chemical control to minimise the risk of microbial contamination.
